Semiconductor manufacturer Microchip Technology announced that its operations were disrupted by a cyberattack.
U.S. chipmaker Microchip Technology suffered a cyberattack that disrupted operations at several of its manufacturing plants. The company detected potentially suspicious activity involving its IT infrastructure on August 17, 2024.
The attack severely impacted the production capacity of the company that shut down or isolate some systems to contain the incident. Microchip Technology launched an investigation into the security breach with the help of external cybersecurity experts. The chipmaker confirmed that the attack impacted its ability to fulfill orders.
“On August 17, 2024, Microchip Technology Incorporated (the “Company”) detected potentially suspicious activity involving its information technology (“IT”) systems. Upon detecting the issue, the Company began taking steps to assess, contain and remediate the potentially unauthorized activity. On August 19, 2024, the Company determined that an unauthorized party disrupted the Company’s use of certain servers and some business operations. The Company promptly took additional steps to address the incident, including isolating the affected systems, shutting down certain systems, and launching an investigation with the assistance of external cybersecurity advisors.” reads the FORM 8-K report filed with Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). “As a result of the incident, certain of the Company’s manufacturing facilities are operating at less than normal levels, and the Company’s ability to fulfill orders is currently impacted.”
Microchip did not provide details about the attack, it only said that is working on restoring affected IT systems and resuming normal business operations.
“The company is working diligently to bring the affected portions of its IT systems back online, restore normal business operations, and mitigate the impact of the incident,” the company added.
Microchip Technology Incorporated is a publicly listed American corporation that manufactures microcontroller, mixed-signal, analog, and Flash-IP integrated circuits. Its corporate headquarters is located in Chandler, Arizona. Its wafer fabs are located in Tempe, Arizona, Gresham, Oregon, and Colorado Springs, Colorado. The company’s assembly/test facilities are in Chachoengsao, Thailand, and Calamba and Cabuyao, Philippines. Sales for the 2024 fiscal year were US$7.6 billion.
