The first Toy Story 5 teaser threatens the toys with a tablet

This is the new face of evil for Pixar’s upcoming Toy Story sequel.

Disney and Pixar have released the first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5, showing tablet screens as an “all-new threat to playtime.” The trailer introduces — much to the horror of Woody and co — a new character called “Lilypad,” a frog-shaped tablet played by Greta Lee (Russian Doll, Tron: Ares), alongside the tagline “the age of toys is over.”

Toy Story 5 is set to hit theaters on June 19th, 2026, more than 30 years after the first Toy Story movie debuted in 1996. The teaser itself doesn’t provide a lot of insight into the plot besides identifying that technology will take on the villainous role, alluding to concerns around real children ditching traditional toys in favor of screentime. Conan O’Brien was also recently cast to play a “toilet training tech toy” called Smarty Pants.

Kids becoming glued to tablet screens is hardly an “all-new” concern, but Pixar may be betting on winning over parents with that theming, alongside the proven profitability of the Toy Story franchise. That seems like more of a sure bet than Pixar’s most recent project, Elio. That movie was released this summer and pulled in just $21 million during its US debut, making it Pixar’s worst box-office opening in the entire history of the company.
